OLD KIRKYARD SURNAMES

All genealogists are interested in monumental inscriptions (MIs) and books do exist which detail, in shorthand form, pre-1855 MIs.  For Gargunnock I have drawn up a database of all 229 gravestones in the old kirkyard (plus about 100 in the lower graveyard) containing word-for-word inscriptions.

Below is a list of surnames drawn from that database of and also a list of initials which tend to appear on the very oldest stones. Contact me with the ones you’re interested in and I’ll email the detailed inscriptions or photos.  The numbering system is my own and differs from the Mitchell one and also from the Stirling Council Lair Records.  Reconciling them is a job for another day!

KIRKYARD INITIALS

Of less interest to anyone other than diehard genealogists are the most ancient gravestones with only initials on them and perhaps a date.  But at the same time they may have other symbols carved on them which might be of interest.

Sketches, as shown left,  may be seen in Alison Mitchell’s book Stirlingshire MI - Stirling West. Pre-1855. A4, 218pp. available from the Scottish Genealogy Society  Price: £14.00
